Looking for Trip Planning advice for a Charleston, SC to Los Angeles

Am planning a route to help a friend move to LA. My first route option is to go from Charleston to Jacksonville and somewhat along the gulf coast through TX, AZ, NM.

The second option is to go from Charleston and then northwest through St. Louis/Kansas and go through Colorado and Utah.

Route one seems to offer more in terms of weather, cities and not driving through Kansas. Route two offers Moab, the Rockies and better scenery in the west potentially.

Any advice is appreciated! We are both from the NE and both routes would be a new experience.
