Doing my first solo trip through Spain this summer. What are some good tips for a first timer?

I'm a 22 year old canadian guy planning on backpacking through Spain this summer in July. For those that have ever solo traveled through Spain how much did it cost you? I have done some research on pricing of hostels, airfare, and buses, but would really help me a lot to read some personal experiences. My plan is to fly into Madrid and travel to Valencia and into the southern region. I have about a ~4000-4500 CAD budget. I plan on staying in hostels and occasionally find a AirBNB. I speak basic Spanish as well. The thing is I am not sure where to begin planning honestly as it feels a little overwhelming on where to start. Do people book hostels beforehand or on the go? How much should I have pre-planned?

I'm willing to rough it up stay in cheap hostels take the bus cook my own food own occasion.

Any advice will help me
