Quitting and Traveling! Any advice for planning the whole thing out?

Background: I'm 31/M and have been thinking about doing this for a while and have finally decided to pull the trigger on it. My job has taken a serious left turn and I no longer want to be there. After numerous failed attempts to transfer to a different position or "trying to make it work" I keep ending back at the same conclusion that I'm miserable there and need to get out. I have a friend also quit the same place last year and went to stay with his cousin in Hawaii for two months between jobs. While there he bought a ticket to Japan and did a two week solo trip, loved it and planted the idea of doing a solo trip in my head when he got back.

The Plan: As of right now I've got about two months or so until I quit and put everything in motion..I've settled on May 1st (or shortly thereafter) to quit and hit the road. Ideally I'd like to take about 2-3 months to travel, though I'd love to go longer if money allows. I chose May 1st since my apartment lease will be up I can move all my things into a friend's place so I don't have to pay for storage while I'm gone. This will leave me with my only bill being my cellphone so I only have to worry about travel and on the road expenses.

My tentative plan for now is to drive from where I am at (Michigan) out to the West coast and doing some camping/backpacking along the way (I've heard Yosemite is lovely) and leaving my car at a friend's house on the west coast and flying out from there.....or just flying out from here depending on how many places outside of the US I end up planning on going to and how much I need to budget for that. I have a friend in Hawaii that said I can stay with her for as long as I want. I was going to make that my first stop and would like to do Japan from there, pretty much just like my friend but then continue on from there. I figure Thailand would be a good next stop since it's cheap and then hop to Europe from there to do some backpacking before heading back to the US. I'd like to start a blog on my travels and really stretch my photography muscles both of which have been hobbies on the serious back-burner for far too long.

Anyways, I'm turning to you fine people for some advice to help me out! Am I crazy to be doing this? Probably. But I'm also stubborn as hell and there's no turning back when I make a decision like this.

TL;DR - Quitting my job to travel the world for a few months, 12k budget and have a few questions aside from any general advice you might have!

  • Aside from Tickets, room & board and food what else should I be budgeting for?
  • What are some things I need to plan for on something like this that I can easily overlook?
  • How should I go about planning out a broad travel plan while leaving room for flexibility?
  • Once I figure out my final travel path should I book plane tickets in advance or try to get deals on tickets closer to when I want to leave? I've heard arguments for both.
