Having trouble deciding what to do about my awesome apartment

The apartment I live in is a once in a lifetime find. It’s huge, beautiful, modern, centrally located, and INSANELY cheap with the best roommates ever. I’m so reluctant to give it up when my lease ends, but I need to travel. My landlord doesn’t allow subletting under any circumstances. It’s technically feasible for me to save up enough to pay off 6 months or so of rent in advance, but that’s such a gross waste of money that could be funding pretty much my entire trip. I guess I could try to find someone who only needs a place for a year, but I really worry that they wouldn’t want to leave when I come back at the end of their lease. I guess I might just have to suck it up and let the place go. Has anyone faced any similar situations? Continued to pay rent while traveling indefinitely?
