Central America solo, for the "older" girl who's weary of solo travel
I'm 36 and tired of travelling alone but still have itchy feet. I feel like I've aged out of the "hostel" crowd, but I find hotels to be isolating. I want to meet people when I'm travelling!
I just impulse-booked a flight for an amazing price - 225 bucks from Vancouver to Cancun. I have 17 days including the travel days (so 15 FULL days). Ideally I'd like to make my way south to Antigua, Guatemala. I want to climb volcanoes and camp in Tikal National Park if you can still do that! I love ruins, nature, hiking, history... I am not hugely into beaches, but I will lie on a beach at sunset if I sufficiently exhausted myself during the day.
I would love suggestions of places to go that won't be overrun with package tourists, or only couples, or only 19 year olds on spring break. I am not going till the end of the year so I have lots of time to plan. If anyone can suggest a great place to spend New Years in the region, that would also be great - it's my birthday!
And anyone else have a hard time finding their niche when travelling solo in their 30s?
