12 days in Vietnam, 3 days in Hanoi, do I skip Halong Bay?

Is it an absolute must do? Or can I be happily occupied in Hanoi instead?

If I go for a 2 day 1 night cruise in Halong Bay, it means arriving in Hanoi 0530am on the Wednesday off a sleeper train from Dong Hoi, travelling to the Bay Thursday, night on the boat, traveling back on the Friday and then on to Phu Quoc on the Saturday. It just makes the last half very travel intensive which I can't really be faffed with. I've got river kayaking, snorkeling and swimming in elsewhere, and I work on boats, so that's not a novelty..! But it seems like THE place to go! Thoughts?
