Looking for advice on seeing Halong Bay, Vietnam, for seven people on a reasonable budget.
So, I'm currently on a year long trip and will be flying to Hanoi from China in 4 days. My three good friends from back home, plus their respective SO's are coming to visit me for 5 days between June 14 and 19. I have already planned the 14 and 15th in Hanoi with them. They are all currently in Thailand having a grand time so I'm trying to do most of the planning myself.
I was thinking of going to Cat Ba on the 16th, staying on Cat Ba the night of the 16th, and if possible taking a 2D/1N cruise on the 17th and 18th from Cat Ba around Halong Bay.
Some cruise operators (Cat Ba ventures, Eco Friendly Vietnam) I have contacted and they quote me at around $125 per person for a 2D/1N cruise for seven people. That price is unfortunately out of the budget range for my friends. I would say we would be more looking for the $60-90 per person all inclusive boat tours, but trying to find tours like that online is difficult.
So does anyone have any recommendations for cheaper but decent boat tours in Halong Bay? Or is the $120 per person quote for 2D/1N about normal? Is it possible to just go to Cat Ba, and then book tours there with local operators, or is that a risky strategy with regards to being ripped off?
So yeah, any advice on Halong Bay/Cat Ba/Lan Ha Bay would be well appreciated. Basically if anyone can recommend a good boat tour company or can give advice on how to DIY it from Cat Ba Island.
I am a 25 year old male, and my friends three guys and three girls aged between 27-33.
