Solo travelling to NZL [JULY - AUG] - Need some travel advice and potential travel buddies!
Hey All! I know that you're all very busy so I'll keep it as concise as possible.
Soo, I've decided to go ahead and travel a bit more this year (why the hell not). I recently booked an impromptu (if you can call it that) trip over to New Zealand between 31st July --> 17th August. After having been by myself in the USA for a week last year after visiting a few friends from uni, I absolutely fell in love with the entire concept of solo travel. It's like I was finally able to do what I wanted to do and take my own 'road' so to speak. As such, I have decided to do the majority of this trip SOLO. I decided to rent a car (damn the expense), pack my hiking gear/ camera/ ski gear and head on a decent south island trip. My (already majority pre-booked) travel itinerary is as follows: -Christchurch 31st July --> 2nd Aug -Kaikoura 2nd Aug --> 3rd Aug -Nelson 3rd Aug --> 4th Aug -Punakaiki 4th Aug --> 6th Aug -Franz Josef 6th --> 8th -Queenstown 8th --> 13th -Te Anau 13th --> 15th -Dunedin 15th --> 16th -Christchurch 16th -->17th
Finally onto the questions. 1. Firstly, Does anyone have any general travel tips for that part of the country, for that part of the year (I already know it's going to be cold etc)? How much should I budget for food and general expenses? 2. Secondly, Could anyone suggest really worthwhile/ must-see attractions (namely day hikes) at the places I'm going. I know people hate having to plan other peoples holidays, but there is soo much to choose from (i.e. Franz Josef vs fox glaciers/ things to see in Christchurch (botanical gardens etc))? 3. Thirdly (and almost in contradiction to this group), would anyone be willing to meet up and explore, or catch up for a drink and chat. I generally like to meet people while I'm over there, but the internet is so awesome in its ability to give me the option to organise these things beforehand. I'm pretty relaxed about what we're doing, as long as it's really worthwhile. I know that this is really pre-emptive, but I'm a really organised type of person. This is the first time I've ever considered doing this so let's see how it goes.
A little about myself. I'm a 22 y/o male from south Sydney, AUS. I'm currently undertaking my PhD but also work as an RA in neuromedicine. I'm athletic, outgoing, and generally pretty energetic (when I've had enough sleep). I love the outdoors, meeting new people over a drink/ chat, photography, psychology, philosophy, history, science, and all things good. I'm quite possibly one of the easiest people to get along with as I'll probably cave and want to do whatever my mates are thinking of.
