What has your experience been like with Balkan locals?

I’m in the middle of an 8 day solo Bulgarian trip. I’ve been to 25 countries across 5 continents but this is my first Eastern European journey (I’ve been to Hungary but don’t really count that). At first I thought locals here were just shy/standoffish, but I’ve come to the conclusion that they are the rudest of any country I’ve been to yet.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of fantastic people here, who are very eager to speak to you and help you. But at a higher ratio than other places I’ve been, there are people (shop keeps, taxi drivers, waiters, people in stands at churches and museums) who are downright mean. I’ve learned local phrases, and do my best not to be bothersome but it seems that they are annoyed to deal with foreigners. Maybe it’s just the culture? I have some other Balkan trips planned for the future, and this won’t hamper that, I’m mostly just curious as to whether maybe I’m not aware of a cultural thing, or have just had bad luck.

By the way, Bulgaria is fantastic, and rich in its history. Just left Rila Monastery and fly from Sofia to Varna tomorrow, and highly recommend it so far.
