Traveling thru Peru vs. Mexico: differences, similarities? (x-post from r/travel)

Originally posted this last week on r/travel and thought I'd repost it here as well.

I've made three different trips to Mexico within the last two and a half years, but for next year I'm thinking about switching it up and visiting Peru instead. If this means anything, I'm American, male, I'd be doing the backpacker hostel circuit, and I may either be traveling solo or with one companion.

To anyone who's traveled through both countries, how would you compare them in terms of how I should prepare, what experiences I should expect, what adjustments to make, etc? What adjustments did you have to make for Peru that you wouldn't have needed for Mexico? For that matter, what adjustments did you make for Mexico that you ALSO had to make for Peru?

(For example, here's one major difference that I'm already vaguely aware of: in Peru it might be an issue to adjust to high altitudes, which was not the case with any of my Mexico trips.)

For reference, here's where I went in Mexico. All of those places were hot and humid with lots of mosquitoes.

  • Oaxaca in April 2015
  • Tijuana/Ensenada in April 2016
  • Yucatan Peninsula (Tulum/Valladolid/Playa del Carmen) last month

And here is where I might possibly go in Peru:

  • Cusco
  • Macchu Picchu
  • Arequipa: I've heard good things about that place
  • Lima: I'm sure I'll likely be flying in and out, but I've heard it's not exactly the high point of visiting Peru. I might just stay for a night or two in Miraflores.
  • Iquitos: I'm kind of intrigued because it's apparently not reachable by road at all so most of the vehicles are motorbikes or tuk-tuks instead of cars.
