Is Couchsurfing Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

I'm new to Couchsurfing but I am planning to use it for a few upcoming trips of mine. I've heard fantastic things about the experiences people have had and I really love the idea of seeing a city through the eyes of a local.

I've been trying to find more female hosts since I am a single female. But the site definitely has a lot more males than females.

However, I have been getting a lot of messages from men that want to host me or meet up. Some of them have no references, so obviously I steer clear of them. But some have 30+ positive references and seem like good guys.

Should I accept requests from people that I haven't initiated contact with at all?

I've heard a lot of good things about the site. But I have also heard the unfortunate stories of hosts that prey on women, make them feel uncomfortable, or worse, assault them. And then people always seem to blame the women for staying with a man they met on the internet.

I would like to believe in the best in people and I know these stories are few and far between in the Couchsurfing community, but I also want to make sure I'm not being an idiot by being too trusting.

TL;DR What's the general rule of thumb, should a single woman accept offers from male hosts they haven't reached out to? Or should you only accept to stay with people you have messaged directly?
