Really stressed about where I can sleep in my car, any advice would be awesome!

Hey everyone, I’m trying to leave in a day or two for a last minute and very improvised cross country road trip from upstate NY to Arizona. I have my car stocked up and even have a roll up mattress in it to sleep in the back and put poster board over the windows.

Here’s what I’ve found about overnight parking.

Most rest stops (at least as far as IL) only allow 3 hour parking at night, sounds like I could get woken up after 3 hours by a cop and told to leave or worse, given a ticket.

Walmart - I guess Walmart used to let people stay over night in their lots, but now because of covid even the ‘24hr’ Walmart’s have started closing at 11, is it still safe to stay at those? It also seems like almost every Walmart I’ve read about at all stays has reviews from people saying you can’t stay over night at this location.

Next, campgrounds! Campgrounds sound almost like a perfect place to stop and sleep in your car, HOWEVER almost all of them close their offices by like 5pm, maybe some are open until 9pm (very very very few). I’d really like to be able to drive 12 hrs a day and usually wake up at the earliest around 11am, so I feel super screwed in terms of getting into camp grounds.

SO all of that said, I would really appreciate anyone‘s advice on what you all think I should do. It’s so frustrating to me that states don’t just have designated sleep in your car spots without 3 hour limits. It’s like they’d prefer we crash! Thanks so much to anyone taking the time!
