1-to-? Month Roadtrip Across America Questions
Hi there!
I've been thinking about going on a long roadtrip across America soon. I don't have a specific 'plan' in mind, but I do have a rough idea. It would consist of going to a new city/state roughly once a week. So drive somewhere, stay there for a week, move on to the next spot. I'd probably start in Oregon, then hit Seattle, then hit Montana, then the Dakotas, Minneapolis, etc. The reason this is so appealing to me is that...I can stop the trip whenever I want. If I decide I'm hating it by the time I get to Montana? Drive home, no problem. If I end up enjoying it immensely? I could hit all of the northern states, most of which I've never been to, drive down the East Coast, and hit a bunch of the southern states on the way back.
Just some background: I have a newer, fuel-efficient car. I will be working 9-5 on most days, but I work from "home" and can work from anywhere (this is the main reason why my plan involves staying in each place for a week or so). My finances are all straightened out, I have an emergency fund, etc.
So my initial thought was just to find cheap AirBnBs/hotels along the way as I'll need WiFi. For some of the trip I wouldn't mind camping and then heading to a cafe to work, but for a lot of it I'd prefer to have somewhere where I can sleep/shower/shit.
My main question is for anyone with experience with this is: About how much should I expect to pay on lodging?
I was really hoping I could sort of replace my rent with AirBnb/hotel "rent," which means ~$1,000 per month. That's not a hard number or anything, but I'd love if I could have the cost of lodging be below $1,300 per month.
I've only done a small amount of research so far, but so far that seems....difficult, especially because I'll need WiFi for sure, and would prefer my own space rather than just a room in a house or whatever.
Sorry for the novel, but does anyone have experience with this, and can you tell me if I'm being reasonable or not?
And aside from that, any tips you have for me?
