Interesting stops during the summer on route 40 from AZ-->CA?

Going to be going cross country to move my partner back to Cali (finally.) We're driving so he can bring all of his stuff, and trying to make a fun little summer trip out of this since we've been inside the house for forever.

Has anyone made this trek before. Anyone have any tips or tricks to share? Stops that I must make? We're already planning on camping out in either flagstaff or the grand canyon, but have nothing planned for before that.

I've never been on a trip longer than the coast of California, so this trip seems intimidating and exciting. I would appreciate any advice 😊

Note: again this trip is for the summer 2021 (hopefully the majority will have been vaccinated.) Looking for recommendations on: camp sites, food spots, nice hikes, lakes/rivers/bodies of water to gaze at and dip a toe into, etc.
