Portland Or, to Savanna GA 2900 miles round trip......coast to coast darn near.

Hello everyone,

My S/O and I are at high risk, so, instead of a 5 hour flight, we are going to take a road trip to do some work on a place in Georgia, and yes we kind of have to go. I have a Jeep grand Cherokee (fairly late model) and she has a Suburu outback, (also a fairly late model). Both cars are in perfect shape and ready to go.

  1. We'd like to sleep in the car to avoid humans as much as possible
  2. Time will be an issue, we have like 15 days for the trip and the drive is about 4 days each way (ish)
  3. We do need to bring some tools and such along for the ride, complicating matters a bit.

I have lots of options going through my head.

should I buy a little tear drop trailer (jeep has tow capabilities) ? (they are spendy, almost too much, would have to finance it)

which car should we take? the Suburu gets better mileage though not by much. The Jeep does about 25-30 on the highway and the "buru" gets about 35. The jeep has more headroom and a little bit more room overall (not much).

any tips and tricks for a new roatripper?

where should we park to sleep? I see that you can park in Walmart lots, and maybe truck stops, and some states allow overnight stays in rest areas, or even BLM land, though that seems odd.

How many miles a day is a prudent target? my thought process led me to about 600 per day ish.

I will be happy to have any help I can, this is new to me, sure I've done 7-10 hour road trips, never across country...

don't laugh, my biggest concern is bathrooms.......I have buckets with seats and the appropriate bags etc...but am a little bit concerned about using them in the wild, off the side of the road....whats the thought here on all that?

we really are high risk for covid, so less touching and stopping is best for us :)

thank you for your time!!
