Need advise for a road trip from LA to Mount Rushmore
I'm planning a road trip from LA to Mount Rushmore next month, and I could use some advise since this is the first time I'm traveling with my kids in such a long road trip. This is what I've planned for so far:
Aug 10: LA -> Vegas (5 hrs)
Aug 11: Vegas -> Salt Lake City (8 hrs)
Aug 12: Salt Lake City -> Mount Rushmore (10 hrs)
Aug 13: Mount Rushmore
Aug 14: Mount Rushmore -> Denver (6 hrs)
Aug 15: Denver -> Vegas (11 hrs)
Aug 16: Vegas
Aug 17: Vegas -> LA (5 hrs)
Other than Vegas and Mount Rushmore, all the other stops are flexible. A couple of things to consider:
- Dates are pretty much set, since I've only taken 1 week off from work, and I don't want to leave LA on Friday evening because traffic will be horrible.
- I will be traveling with my 2 kids (3 and 5 yrs old - very active, can't sit in the car for too long. 3 yr old still naps), my parents (65+, Dad - bad knees, can't walk for too long. Mom - hates outdoor activities), and my wife.
- Hotels are already booked for Vegas.
- I'm planning to stay at the Lodge at Palmer Gulch near Mount Rushmore due to the number of kids friendly activities that are available. I figure they won't care much about Mount Rushmore, but any other recommendations are welcome.
- Traveling times are based on Google Map. Not sure how accurate they are.
Is my itinerary fine? What hotels and activities do you recommend? Any other comments or feedback are welcome.
