How have you all handled SOs with solo traveling?

(TL;DR at the bottom)I've been planning this trip I want to do for a couple years, and I'm set to do it in almost exactly four years from now. I'm planning to backpack and rock climb in New Zealand for a year then hit up Asia, the Middle East, and Europe (more rock climbing mostly, in all likelihood), then spend a few years in Brazil learning Portuguese, getting to know my family, and of course more rock climbing. This whole trip is probably going to end up taking at least several years, and I'm super excited. The one issue, however, is my girlfriend. She's amazing and I really like being with her, but she's not terribly outdoorsey and she isn't much of a climber. I don't think she would have a lot of fun if she came with me as I would want to be roughing it on backcountry trails or doing some serious rock climbing, which she hasn't seemed very interested in either. Through some introspection I also realized that I've always pictured myself doing these travels primarily on my own, mostly as a self discovery thing, as I've never been truly independent (always near family or with an SO etc). Normally this would be fine, we could either break up early or keep things light, but I think my girlfriend is very serious about me. We've been living together for several months and been together for almost two years (we were long distance for a while) and I've been getting more and more of a sense that she's very serious about this. We've had some light conversations about my travel plans where I brought up some of my concerns and she says I'm thinking way to far ahead and it will be fine. I feel as though this trip places somewhat of a timer on our relationship, which I don't like.TL;DR: I have a long term girlfriend (2 years) and, like most relationships do, it's getting more serious. However, I have a years long solo trip I've been wanting to do for a very long time planned to start in 2023. Advice? What do you all think? Am I thinking too far ahead? Is traveling with an SO a downgrade from the solo travel experience? Is doing long distance during an extended solo travel unfair?Feel free to let me know if I ought to provide more information :) via /r/solotravel https://ift.tt/2XYmdWe
