Tips for solo backpacking Malaysia?
Hello everyone,
So I am about a month or two into solo backpacking Asia (for a total of 7 or so months) and am currently in Malaysia. I wanted to see if there is anyone with some tips or advice for experiencing the most out of the country, as so far I have been a bit unenthusiastic about my short time here (a week or so, 5 days in KL, currently in Ipoh).
I have been staying in hostels, walking about as much as possible and trying to see the sights. I was very excited to hear that Ipoh has great food culture but have since been struggling to get into it. I'll be the first to admit I don't overly understand how their food culture here works, the 'banana leaf' restaurants are tricky and ordering is tough when you don't speak the language. The small little side restaurants/carts I find haven't yet peaked my interest on taste or price.
Has anyone been to Malaysia and had a similar experience then had it turned around, or have any advice on how best to appreciate the country? I can't expect to like every place I visit, but wanted to give it a good crack before moving on to Singapore, Borneo and Vietnam. I did have some very mixed reviews coming in to Malaysia but wanted to see for myself.
If it helps: 25m, friendly neighbourhood Aussie.
Thanks!
