A cultural question for solo travelers...

I️ wasn’t entirely sure where to ask this, but I️ thought this sub would have some good opinions.

Would you have preferred to have been raised in an extremely tight community (small country, all similar culture, language, and religion) or a very diverse community (similar to the U.S., you don’t know everyone/everyone you see in the street is a brand new face).

I️ come from the latter and feel a disconnect with society because I️ am not similar culturally with everyone, and my family is spread across the country. I️ feel I️ don’t have many close relatives or shared places/memories/etc. I️ will most likely never see any of the classmates I️ grew up with, and I cannot say I will keep in close contact with the friends I have now (plan to move to the opposite coast).

In contrast, my SO grew up in a country with less than 1 million people and all the family he’s ever known is within a 20 mile radius. Every Friday they go to his grandma’s, every Saturday they go to the other grandma’s. His father’s friends are the same friends his father knew since he was a child. Sounds nice, right?

I’m trying to convince myself that living somewhere expansive and diverse like the U.S. is great, but all I️ seem to feel is envious of these close communities. What are your thoughts?
