What to do on the route between LA and Las Vegas in June
Hi,
I am currently planning a huge West Cost roadtrip and as part of that, I've already made reservations for Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I'm leaving LA on June 9 and have to arrive in Las Vegas on June 11.
I 'm traveling in a campervan.
Initially, I planned to spend two nights at Jumbo Rocks Campground in Joshua Tree Nation Park, but the more I look at the temperatures and experiences of other people, my doubts are growing that spending a full day in Joshua Tree Park in June is really enjoyable due to the blazing heat. Maybe It is better to spend only one night there (arrive in the evening, get up early in the next morning to take a hike and then depart early before it gets too hot).
That's why I am looking for alternatives and actually I think that San Jacinto might be a nice option because it seems like when you take the Aerial Tramway to the top, you will find quite pleasant temperatures for hiking and enjoying the stunning views even during the summer. The only problem is that there isn't a nice campground nearby that is both accessible by a campervan and at sufficient altitude to be cool enough to get some sleep at night. I'm definitely not gonna spend the night in Palm Springs in a campervan without AC at that time of the year when temperatures almost for sure rise far above 100F.
It seems like on the other side of Mt. San Jacinto there is a nice campground in Idyllwild, but it seems that some roads are closed at the moment due to severe damages and there is some uncertainty whether they will be open in June again or not. Also, I definitely would want to take the Aerial Tramway to the top because it seems that from there you get the best views, but the problem is that it is located on the other side of the mountain and you have to drive a bit to get there from Idyllwild.
Does anyone have some nice suggestions for alternatives / a good route to take from LA to Las Vegas in a campervan and places to sleep for two nights?
