Planning a general itinerary for July- looking to go to the Southwest from the upper plains. Not too many set plans, would love to hear some input.
First, let me say that I understand that going to the southwest in July will be very hot- I grew up in Phoenix and am used to it.
My wife and I are planning a 2-2.5 week roadtrip starting in early July. We live in the Black Hills area of South Dakota and would like to make it to Phoenix to visit my family for a few days. Otherwise our only set plans are to visit some friends in Salt Lake City, Utah. We will be driving a Subaru Crosstrek and do enjoy camping
Our general plan was to head across Wyoming to Salt Lake City, then head down the I-15 towards Zion NP and the Grand Canyon. From there we would head through Flagstaff to Phoenix. On the way back we are debating either going through Monument Valley/Canyonlands/Arches to Grand Junction, CO, then back through Denver, CO up to the Black Hills. The other option would be to go to Santa Fe, New Mexico, then take the I-25 back up through Denver. We would possibly stop at other national parks/monuments like Great Sand Dunes as well.
With 2.5 weeks or so we also think we'd have time to hit a few places maybe just out of the way. What are your thoughts? Would somewhere like Great Basin National Park in Nevada be worth stopping? What other places are worth hitting?
