Itinerary Feedback for Alaska's Kenai Peninsula
My husband and I are renting a camper van out of Anchorage in June. Is my itinerary too ambitious? Am I missing something completely, spending too much time somewhere, or not enough somewhere else?
Night 1-
Pick up the van in Anchorage and boondock somewhere close to town for the night. I've read about Anchorage becoming more strict on overnight parking/camping- are there any parks or places near downtown that I could park a 20' van overnight?
Night 2-
Drive to Homer and spend the night out on the spit
Night 3-
Explore Homer- Maybe do the Kachemak Bay water taxi, the Farmer's Market, etc or camp somewhere nearby
Night 4-
Drive from Homer to Quartz Creek & camp near the lake. We chose this because we didn't want to drive from Homer and do the Exit Glacier hike on the same day. We also wanted to get off the beaten path a little bit.
Night 5-
Drive to Seward and hike Exit Glacier's Harding Ice Field trail. Stay at the waterfront RV park.
Night 6-
Take a cruise tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park and stay in Seward again
Night 7-
Drive to the Portage area, hike Byron Glacier, camp at Williwaw
Night 8-
Leave Williwaw to see Whittier in the morning, the Wildlife Conservation Center mid-day, ride the Alyeska tram for a late lunch, and drop off the van by 5:00 in Anchorage. This day is a little crazy because we're meeting our parents in Whittier AND returning the van.
