Is it worth going to Vietnam in the 'rainy' season?

I finish uni soon, and have £2,500 saved up. At the moment I'm torn between Indonesia and Vietnam. Vietnam appeals to me more culture-wise, and I'm thinking of doing a motorbike trip from the north to the south.

Only problem is that the time I'll supposedly be going is late May until late July, which is slap bang in the middle of rainy season (with the exception of central Vietnam).

My questions are as follows: How often does it rain in rainy season? Can you still enjoy sun/beaches? Is it significantly disruptive when travelling around and trying to enjoy the place? Most importantly, will it mean that fewer fellow travellers will be in hostels, meaning I'll have less of a chance to meet people?
