How do you get over the feeling that you're missing out while traveling?
So I'm 20M from the US of A, and I'm embarking on my first big solo trip to the Andes this summer (first solo trip of any size, if you don't count a weekend in Maine this may). 2 months in Northern Chile, Southern Peru, and Northwestern Argentina.
Starting in La Serena, Chile for the solar eclipse, I have a flight from Santiago to Iquique on July 11, and a Machu Picchu ticket August 6, before flying to Texas from Lima on August 26th, and then flying home 2 days later. Other than a hostel in La Serena and a train to Aguas Calientes, Peru, I have nothing else booked as of now (though I should book an Aguas Calientes hostel soon).
Now, I am stoked for the trip, but I found that after booking my Machu Picchu tickets, I found myself feeling sad that it locked me into something (though when I'm there, it's gonna be hella awesome), especially because I have a set date that I have to leave Peru by (and I can't extend my trip, because I have classes for the next semester of school).
When I first started planning my trip, in my initial inexperienced excitement, I made a list of destinations to visit, but as I actually have to book things, I've found myself needing to cut things out, as I like to travel slowly.
Current plan is:
- Start in La Serena and the Elqui Valley for a few days until July 3rd for the eclipse on the second.
- July 3rd - 10th: Explore Central Chile between La Serena and Santiago, or if Argentina does well and Chile doesn't in the Copa America, go to Mendoza, Argentina (and also for Argentine Independence Day).
- July 10th - 11th: Santiago until my flight to Iquique. Maybe pick a neighborhood or two to explore (I have an evening flight).
- July 11th - 14th: Iquique & La Fiesta de la Virgen in La Tirana
- July 14th - July 26th: Northern Chile (such as San Pedro de Atacama) and Salta, Argentina, ending in Arica, Chile.
- July 26th - July 29th: Arica, Chile & Tacna, Peru (Peruvian Independence Day)
- July 30th - August 12th: Cusco & Around, including Machu Picchu and Choquequirao.
- August 12th - 21st: Arequipa and the Colca Canyon and/or Lake Titicaca
- August 21st - 23rd: Andahuaylas, Peru (My dad has a friend from there).
- August 23rd - 26th: Lima, Peru
Lake Titicaca might also be able to slide into the "Cusco & Around" section
Originally, I wanted to explore a lot more of Argentina (particularly near the border with Paraguay, east of Salta) and the area south of Antofagasta in Chile, but I also know that if I did any of those, I'd have to cut out other parts of the trip out (mainly Iquique and La Tirana, because the festival is time sensitive), so I'm wondering how you deal with cutting out places you want to visit?
TL;DR Planned too ambitious of an itinerary for a trip. Cutting it down and feeling sad about it. How do you deal with that sadness?
