Solo Woman Travel To Egypt
Hi r/solotravel,
I am planning to travel to Dahab in Egypt for about 7 weeks in the summertime as a solo female traveler. This would be my first-time solo-traveling, however, I previously lived and went to school in the Maadi expat neighboorhood when I was much younger (left in 2011). I have been to Dahab previously and I am aware that it's a much more relaxed atmosphere toward foreigners than the rest of Egypt. I would be mainly scuba diving with a company that would also provide accommodation close by.
However, I do have a few questions and concerns regarding my travel. Because I am now an adult traveling in this country, I will be facing different challenges as a solo woman. I am a blonde and blue-eyed young American woman, so I am very aware that I will likely face decent amounts of street harassment. To what extent will this be applicable to the South Sinai region? How have things changed since 2011 with the political instability? Are there any tips that I should follow when dealing with this harassment? What type of clothing would be okay in that region, since it is much more "Westernized" than the rest of the country? Are there any vaccinations that I may need outside of the standard Hepatitis A and Typhoid?
Additionally, I will likely be traveling from Sharm el-Sheik to Cairo for 3-4 days during my stay. Is it a hassle with immigration/airport officials to fly not only into the country but also within the country? I also have dual citizenship with an EU country - would this be a "safer" option than using my American passport? Is Uber a reliable and safe service that I could use there (I would rather not take taxis by myself)? How do I go about extending a 30-day visa to a longer period of time? What would be a safe amount of tipping money/baksheesh to carry with me? Are the tour group trips off of Tripadvisor generally reliable and safe?
Sorry for the plethora of questions, I just want to be very sure of what to expect in 2019.
