Leaving for Australia in a week (for 1.5 months), very little planned/booked besides the flight. Kind of facing option paralysis.

I'm 23/m, this is my first solo trip, and I haven't ever planned a trip myself.

I know basically which cities I want to hit (the East coast greyhound trip, more details below), but I don't know how to make smaller decisions within the towns. How do I know where I should go? Which places to head to in a given city or even which areas to book a hostel in? When I went to New York with friends, we fucked up by getting a hostel in a sketchy area and almost got mugged on our way to Manhattan. Any time I look up this kind of specific planning info I mostly just get useless top 10 lists like "find cool bars and walk around downtown". I'm having trouble finding specifics. Like even in Sydney for example, or Melbourne, besides the standard landmarks and "walk around downtown", how do I plan more interesting stuff ahead of time?

It's especially concerning because, like I said, I'm leaving next week and I have nothing specific planned or booked yet. And I'm going for 1.5 months.

You can skip the rest of this, but to outline my very basic plan:

land in Sydney (for the round trip, I already have my ticket) but probably fly straight to Melbourne & start there for a few days. Then I planned to fly from Melbourne to Byron Bay (I'm not sure if this is silly, but my thinking is that I could do Sydney at the end & there's not a lot between Melbourne and Byron Bay that I want to do, and a plane is almost as cheap as the bus). At this point I'll grab a greyhound pass from Gold Coast to Cairns and hit all the basics like Gold Coast, Brisbane, Magnetic Island, Whitsundays (?), Cairns, etc and then fly to Alice Springs (I have a tour booked there already), and then back to Sydney then home.
