Getting / Staying Fit while travelling
Hi all, long time lurker first time poster.
I'm 27F, about 1 month into my 6 month South America solo travel (never been away for longer than 3 weeks before) and I'm starting to get concerned about my fitness levels. In my regular non travelling life I wouldn't say I'm exceptionally healthy or unhealthy - the shape I'm in is slightly oval (US size 12), I'm asthmatic, not a gym bunny but cycle a 30 minute route to and from work every day, run occasionally and eat fairly healthily. I have reasonable stamina over long periods and hiked the W trek Torres Del Paine earlier this month without any trouble and was mostly faster than the recommended time per trail. However, I find things like hiking up steep hills really knock it out of me - this is a concern because I'm keen to do one of the trails to Machu Picchu in April and I want to be fit enough to enjoy it (and then some because I have no idea how I'm going to react to the altitude).
My question is: how do you get fit / maintain fitness while you're travelling? I'm quite self conscious about running in a new town (don't want to have my phone out all the time but don't want to get lost - also it's so damn hot here i'ma be a sweaty mess after 1 minute) and also self conscious about exercising in my hostel dorm but I can't think of an alternative to these given that I'm in each place for an average of 3 days.
