12 hour JFK layover

I just booked my ticket home from Central America - got a pretty good deal but I have a 12 hour layover in JFK on a Thursday in April, from 11 am to 11 pm.

How do I make the best of this, as easy and cheap as possible?

I’m looking for something fairly easily reachable by public transport. I’m open for anything - street food, museums, parks, walking around in cool neighbourhoods.

I went to NYC in 2013, so I’ve done most of the tourist things on Manhattan and don’t feel a huge need for doing them again. Brooklyn/Queens would be completely fine (although Central Park is always a nice visit if it’s easy to get there).

I fly in from Mexico City with Interjet and out to Stockholm with Norweigan. I won’t need to wait for/check any luggage. Any tips are highly appreciated!
