(X-post to r/texas) Questions on route for a Texas road trip next month

Hello everyone!

My boyfriend, my dog, and I will be doing a 9-day road trip through Texas next month. We'll be coming in via Dallas and leaving through Austin. We have to choose between going either east or west.

If we go east, we will probably go to New Orleans and then work back to Austin that way.

If we go west, I'd like to go up to Amarillo and see Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon, around and see Prada Marfa and Marathon, Texas and all the small towns that I've read so much about, and wind up back in Austin.

Does anyone have a plan they strongly prefer or recommend one over the other? Or extra stops that you'd recommend us making? I know it's silly to drive so far for such kitschy things, but I love kitsch, and I love small towns. Also, I searched the internet for people who went to Prada Marfa and were disappointed and I haven't found even one person who said they were disappointed. Maybe that's just because once you drive all that way you leave yourself no other choice. Either way, hopeful to hear back from some of you, and thank you in advance! I would also be grateful for tips on dog friendly hiking/dog friendly Texas... bummed about Big Bend, but I understand.
