Traveling from India to Bali overland - is it doable or too ambitious a project?

Hey solo travelers of reddit,

I had this idea to travel from India to Bali using only buses, trains and the occasional ferry. Is it a crazy idea or actually doable (and on a quite tight budget too)?

I would start off in India, traveling around there a bit, then head to Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and finally Indonesia. From Bali I plan on taking a plane to Australia and work there for some time in order to regain all the money the trip would cost.

I'm 19, male, have traveled before (four months in India) and have a budget of 4000 USD max., including transportation. I plan on doing couchsurfing, workaway and possibly some hitchhiking. Except for India, I would mostly avoid detours and focus on crossing the country in a straight line, spending about two weeks in each country.

So, am I crazy and too naive (and too poor) or is this actually doable? My concerns are traveling through Bangladesh, crossing into new countries by land (visa problems?) and running out of money halfway through.

Has anyone done this or something similar? Any tips? Is the budget gonna be ok?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
