My Autumn in New England Literary Road Trip
I've got a road trip planned for this fall that's entirely focused on literary landmarks in New England (with some light hiking for good measure). I'm also reading works by the authors whose homes I'll be visiting all throughout the year. Thought I'd share in case anyone has taken a similar trip (or wants to!). Of course I welcome any suggestions of landmarks, bookstores, coffee shops or breweries you love!
I have not started looking into campgrounds yet, so I'd love your advice on good places to camp near these sites. I'll be in an Escape Campervan (a converted Ford E-150 van or similar), so a car/tent site is fine, though when I was out west in one of these some campgrounds made me pay for an RV site even though these vans don't use any RV amenities. /shrug
(And yes, I'm skipping Boston/Cambridge/Salem. I was there a year ago and toured everything I wanted to! HIGHLY recommend the Longfellow House in Cambridge. The NPS Ranger was so good at her tour the entire tour group was crying. She recited his poetry at every stop on the tour!)
Here's the Roadtrippers version if you're visual.
Day 1: Pickup Escape Campervan in NYC, visit Walt Whitman's Childhood Home in Long Island.
Day 2: Morning hike at Candlewood Lake, Macedonia Brook SP or Housatonic Meadows SP. Afternoon visit house and grounds of Steepletop, Edna St. Vincent Millay's home (Austerlitz, NY)
Day 3: Tour Norman Rockwell Museum. Tour The Mount, Edith Wharton's home and grounds. Tour Arrowhead, Herman Melville's home (if time). Drive to Mt. Greylock State Reservation.
Day 4: Hike Overlook Trail at Mt. Greylook. Drive to Robert Frost Stone House and burial site at Old First Church (Shaftsbury, VT).
Day 5: Walk Robert Frost Wayside Trail (Ripton, VT). Drive to Derry, NH.
Day 6: Tour Robert Frost Farm (Derry, NH). Drive to Concord, MA. Afternoon hike/tour at Walden Pond (incl. original cabin site, Emerson's Cliff, and recreation of Thoreau's cabin).
Day 7: Tour Sleepy Hollow Cemetery (esp. Author's Ridge). Tour Alcott-Orchard House, The Old Manse, Ralph Waldo Emerson's House, and Wayside (Concord, MA).
Day 8: Visit The Montague Bookmill. Possibly visit/hike Shelburne Falls. Drive to/tour Emily Dickinson's House (Amherst, MA).
Day 9: Drive to Hartford, CT to tour Harriet Beecher Stowe's house and Mark Twain's house.
Day 10: Return van and fly home. Cry a little over unpurchased books.
