A Few Questions...

Apologies for the wall of text, I tried to condense this as much as possible.

I currently live in Hawaii and in March I'll be going on a solo road trip starting in LA. I don't have a specific time frame in mind, but a rough estimate is months, at least.

My main concern is figuring out transportation. Two ideas come to mind, but if anyone has any other ideas I'm definitely open to them. First is renting a car. I just turned 18 so this is most likely out of the picture seeing as every rental company I've come across either doesn't rent to 18 year olds or charges astronomical fees. If there are any companies that rent to people my age I'd love to check them out, though I'm not getting my hopes up.

The next option is to buy a car/RV/van, and I'm leaning more towards a RV/van for obvious reasons. What concerns me is my budget of around $10k. I could get a semi-reliable car for $10k, however most RV's/vans in that range seem to be 10-25 years old and have 100k+ miles. Mildly put, I know very little about repairing cars & I don't want to spend much money on repairs.

Also, don't a lot of states require a special license for an RV? My understanding is essentially that if it doesn't weigh over 10-12,000 lbs then I won't need a special license. But I also read about a lot of other stuff making a difference in the qualification as well? The last thing I want is to be driving through a state and get pulled over because of some law I wasn't aware of.

I don't have a specific destination I'd like to reach, so I'm open to any and everything. I know a lot of you are very experienced travelers so what are some must sees in the US? I'm especially interested in places/sights that not many people know about, ones which likely won't come up in a Google search of the same question.

Lastly, any tips on keeping a tight budget? My goal is to spend as close to nothing as I can, not counting the expense of a vehicle. I'm planning on couchsurfing/sleeping in my vehicle to save on what would otherwise be my biggest expense.
