Tips for solo travel to Germany

I've spent the past few months working as an au pair saving money up & taking a basic German language course. To practice a bit & visit a new country (i'm French and i've never been to Germany.. ever), I'll be going there in May for about a month. I'm planning on staying in Düsseldorf first because a friend of mine lives there (so no costs), stay about 5 nights in Dresden, 4 nights in Leipzig, 5 nights in Berlin and 5 nights in Hamburg. (I'm very interested by Dresden and Leipzig, and yes I've already looked at other cities etc ! it's an "informed" choice.)

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on those cities, places to visit etc ? I love walking by myself and taking pictures (I'm interested in architecture), and settling down at cafés to write if that's any help. Looking for interesting places, cafés, bookstores etc ,especially if it's a bit off the beaten path ! Day trips that are possible from those cities (except Düsseldorf since I'll be with my friend who lives there) would work for me as well. Any other general travel tips for Germany are welcome.

It'll be my first bit of solo traveling but I've lived abroad for a year in england on my own, lived on my own in paris for two years as well, so i'm "street-smart" enough not to put myself in stupid situations, generally speaking haha . Thank you in advance ! :)

EDIT: what are your thoughts on bringing your laptop along when solo traveling ? I'll probably need it for a Skype interview regarding a post-Master's Degree year at my university, it's quite a big deal to me as you can imagine so I'll have to bring it along. Do you just keep your laptop on you at all times to be safe or are there other options ?
