Just bought tickets to Italy and I fly out in 3 days, please rip my itinerary to shreds (9 days)
Hi friends, longtime lurker here. Had a moment where I realized the stars aligned (work is slower, been saving a lot of money, no major commitments in life right now, tickets were relatively cheap on such short notice) and I booked tickets to Italy. First time solo traveling! Here is what I've got currently:
Arrive in Milan at 10:35 am: there's supposed to be a 7h layover in Milan before the flight takes off to Rome, but I'm thinking about just leaving the airport in Milan and heading to Venice
Venice: Wednesday - Thurs morning (1 night)
Florence/Tuscany: Thurs afternoon- Sunday morning (3 nights)
Cinque Terre: Sunday afternoon - Tuesday morning (2 night)
Rome: Tuesday evening - Thursday morning (2 nights)
Then my flight boards at FCO at 3:30 pm on Thursday with a 20 hour layover in Milan, which then departs at 1:10 pm.
The one thing that is almost certainly set in stone for me is Florence (not necessarily the length of stay) to finally see and walk along the Pietra Serena sandstone sidewalks, which is something I've wanted to do since 2011. Other than that, I haven't really planned anything else out yet and am not married to any one part of this plan.
And at the risk of sounding crass, I think I'm more interested in the other places than Rome which is why I don't have a lot of time set for it (I have a hard time appreciating art without wanting to keep moving around unless I'm with another person, but appreciating scenery/day-to-day life comes much more naturally). From what I gather, a separate trip to Rome another time sounds like the better way to appreciate it? But I have to be there at some point for my return flight. If I had more time I would have liked to fit in southern Italy (Amalfi Coast, Naples, Capri, Pompeii, Sorrento). I'm also considering just arriving in Rome like my flight is supposed to and checking out those places and forgoing Venice and Cinque Terre. I guess I just wasn't sure if those places would be more enjoyable/romantic with a significant other down the road on another trip? I would love to hear about anyone's experiences with northern and southern Italy and which they preferred on a solo trip.
I hope it doesn't come off as reckless/arrogant to visit another country without speaking the language or proper preparation. Part of me just wants a break from all of it, to let myself feel lost, and to remind myself there's more to life than work. Wouldn't mind having advice on which other cities I could visit and probably what to do there for a first timer. Literally any other advice you have to offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks /r/solotravel
EDIT: also I think I'm going to buy an Osprey 40 liter backpack, which I've seen recommended a few times. I plan on staying in hostels.
