Thoughts on planning solo travel as you're paid?

I've been on quite a few solo trips before, but normally I buy everything ahead of time-- flight tickets, hostel/airbnb reservations, bus/train tickets, etc.

As a student, it's become more difficult for me to have lump sums of money sitting around, which makes it harder for me to purchase everything all at once. I'm considering just buying a ticket, then slowly adjusting my plans/purchases around my paychecks as they come rather than just doing it all months beforehand.

I feel like this is a lot easier with solo traveling than regular traveling, and as a frequent solo traveler, I'm looking to possibly switch up my means of planning.

Does anyone have experience with this? As a person who likes to plan ahead, I'm looking for advice on how to adjust to the mindset shift. Ideally, I'd like to have most of my accommodations purchased before I leave for my trip, but I'm also open to winging it during my journey (if my budget allows).

Which way is more affordable? For those who have done both, which was more enjoyable? I'd appreciate any insight at all.

Note: this isn't specifically for one trip or location, instead it's more of a general question to those who have found ease in booking things "as they go" rather than beforehand.
