Summer cross country road trip from Central Connecticut to Utah or Idaho, mom and teenage son
My son is off to college in the fall and we've wanted to drive across the country (almost all the way) for years. This is our last chance, and we're taking it. My husband, his dad, is staying at home with our younger son to accommodate work and summer activities, so it's just the two of us.
I'm planning to research our route and select a destination over the next month but I thought I'd start here.
We want to see a few national parks and explore out West, mostly, but want to make the most of the drive, as well. We can take up to a month en route. Starting in central Connecticut. Want a circular route so we don't repeat, and want to combine interstate driving with back roads, since nothing beats back roads in the country and my son hasn't experienced that kind of peace - like I did growing up on a farm. (He's a suburban kid who likes city life and is going to an urban-ish college.)
We will be staying in hotels, cost is not an issue, but I do want to avoid congestion and would prefer lesser known sites/parks/towns to avoid crowds, whenever possible. We are jeans and t shirt people, want to keep it simple. No Vegas, Grand canyon, yosemite....(unless we can find a secret path to these). We mostly just want to 'see' places along the route, I'm picturing Utah parks and Montana vistas, but we aren't planning to spend too much time in one place.
Can you point me to resources?
And helpful tips?
