India Protip: Avoid the Golden Triangle and Try The South
Hi All,
Been lurking around for a bit and been seeing all the fuss around India travels. I'm Indian-American (born and raised in the Bay Area), but have spent a significant amount of time traveling to India with family and thought I'd share some thoughts.
North India (Golden Triangle) is a completely different experience than South India. I'd recommend first-time travelers to India to start with South Indian cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Goa, Ooty, Thekkady, Hampi, Pondicherry etc.
India is India, but the combination of a higher literacy rate, better educated and cultural differences between the North and the South (generally more respectful of women; check rape news from India... has it ever happened in a South Indian city? It's always Delhi/Uttar Pradesh), South India I think makes for a much better experience.
I remember vividly the filth/poverty shock of visiting Jaipur and Agra for the first time as someone who's been visiting family in Bangalore and Hyderabad for decades.
I hope this'll convince some of you to consider South India!
Edit: Found a pretty cool article that kind of talks about what I'm trying to say here: https://www.tripsavvy.com/why-tamil-nadu-is-best-for-solo-women-travelers-in-india-3971447
