Backpacking route/recommendations New Delhi > North
Hello I plan to go to New Delhi to visit a friend in a week or so (he is originally from New Delhi). My visit to India will be 4-5 weeks total, and we're going to travel together for 2-3 weeks. I may travel the remained of my 2 weeks on my own depending if my friend can join or not. I traveled SEA on my own last year for 77 days, and like entering SEA I am going in with very basic knowledge, gathering information from people I met along the way. However as my time is more limited I would love reddit to give some advice/tips/insights/what you would like to do in my position. I am looking forward to catching a train from Delhi to our first destination, really interested in getting out into the nature and and checking the beautiful scenery. Possibly another meditation period (completed x2 10 day vipasanna courses in the past, practiced mindfulness for over 2 years) so a introduction into a new technique could be of interest, even combined with yoga. I am also a very social guy so I do have interest in mixing between non-backpacker areas and backpacking towns.
My aims for India are: * Taj Mahal * Himalayan Trek - between 5-10 days, moderate level, nothing crazy cold though * Immerse myself within Northern culture (Coming from UK and living in various places, heard a million and a half brilliant things about India and how diverse the nation is) * Adventurous activities - We looked into Leh Ladakh and saw it offered some good activities such as white water rafting * Maybe a good area exploring on a motorcross bike
Speaking to my friend he said creating a "route" like you would in SEA is not as easy or popular in India. But I was wondering if anyone has done something like this in the past? It looks like some treks journeys begin from Haridwar/Manali. Ideally what I am asking from the lovely audience of reddit, is anything must see from what I have mentioned about myself and my aims. Preferably inbetween New Delhi and Manali or not far off, so once we leave New Delhi we can slowly make our way north until our trek begins.
