[Newbie Question] "How to" navigate a city and travel solo

Traveling solo has been one fear that I wish to accomplish this year, but as easy as it looks for most others in their 20's like myself it looks insanely scary.

For instance I'm afraid of getting lost and not knowing where to go when I've booked a place, or getting my stuff stolen... the danger! Gah!

A major benefit when used well is the usage of public transportation and a phone. I've never used my city's local bus system nor have I ever used a phone to navigate anywhere. How on earth would I navigate the streets of Jakarta for example on my phone if I don't even speak the language? How does one get from A to B asking people where to go? Do you just use Google Maps on your phone?

This is written in a quickie...cause I literally just bought a ticket to Jakarta for no reason or itinerary just to experience it and I'm leaving in a week.
