A man told me, “I would never allow my wife to travel solo!”
Some context: I teach ESL to adults in South Korea and one of my students told me about how he is planning a trip to Europe, so I told him that I was planning a mostly solo trip to Europe this year. My husband works a ton and only has a few days he can take off for vacation. We always travel around Korean Thanksgiving (chuseok) so he will join me for my last city - Paris.
But after explaining this to my male student, he was flabbergasted. He actually used the words, “I wouldn’t allow my wife to do that for more than a few days.” He also said what my mom said -“It’s dangerous!!”
I laughed and told him the trip was my husband’s idea since I wouldn’t stop talking about going to Europe. He told me to go for two months so that’s my plan. I was initially scared to go alone but the more I research the better I feel about it.
I told him my husband and I trust each other and besides, he’s not my master! He didn’t believe me when I said tons of people travel solo.
What kinds of responses have you gotten when you tell people about your solo travels?
