Nicaragua or surrounding areas in December (~2 weeks)
I just found out that I get to attend an academic conference in Nicaragua in December! Obviously this is a bit far off, but since it's during my winter break I want to squirrel away some of my grad school stipend to try and extend the trip a bit. The conference itself is near Matagalpa for 2.5 days, and then I can tack on (paid for by my school) another excursion and one more night in Granada.
I'm hoping to make this a two week trip (including the ~4 days of the conference), probably arriving a few days before and leaving a week after the conference.
I love hiking, rock climbing, caving, rafting, scuba diving (I'm advanced OW), and lots of other outdoor activities, but equally enjoy cities, markets, tourist sites, temple exploring, churches, culture, history, etc. I like partying and probably would enjoy that for one or two nights but I'm definitely not keen on being a party hostel hopper.
I'm American, 25F and speak Spanish though I'm a bit rusty. I'm an experienced solo traveller.
My impression of flight costs around Central America is that I'd probably financially be better off just staying in Nicaragua especially since I'll probably only have two weeks and I'm sure there's plenty to see in two weeks but I'm not dead set on it.
