I've finally finished my itinerary for my Germany-Austria-Italy road trip this May. And criticism or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
This is the simplified version of the trip, obviously in my real itinerary I have addresses, phone numbers, prices, hours and directions. I'd love to hear any suggestions. The trip is in May, it's just my boyfriend and I (both mid 20s) travelling from the US. All travel times are approximates and are padded to account for traffic and stopping for scenic views. This is my first planned trip so I've hope I've done it right. Sorry for the length.
Day 1 - Arrive in Munich at 1pm. 45 minute train ride to Wombat City hostel. Only plans are to eat and go to bed early
Day 2 - Wake up 7am, hostel breakfast. Pick up car at Sixt 3 minutes away. Drive 2 hours, into Austria, to Highline 179 pedestrian suspension bridge. View 2 castles there. 2 hours there. Drive 22 minutes to Neuschwanstein Castle. Closes by 5. Drive 20 minutes to hotel, Gutshof Zum Schluxen.
Day 3 - Wake up around 8am, drive 1.5 hours to Imster Alpine Coaster. Drive 40 minutes to hotel, Haus Kleibert. Spend afternoon on hiking trails around hotel.
Day 4 - Wake up at 7am, drive 3 hours into Italy via the Brenner Pass to Passo Pordoi. Take cable car, do 3 hour hike. Drive 22 minutes to hotel, Cesa Stefi.
Day 5 - Wake up by 9am, drive 2 hours to Monte Cristallo (Mountain). Take cable car, spend the day on the mountain. Drive 2 hours to hotel in Austria, Pension Edelweisss Hadergasse.
Day 6 - Sleep in. No plans for the day except to drive around the Glossglocker High Alpine Road. Stay in same hotel.
Day 7 - Wake up at 8:30, drive 3 hours to Burg Hochosterwitz (Castle). Drive 20 minutes to hotel, Panoramadorf Saualpe Sereinig.
Day 8 - Wake up at 7am, drive 2 hours to Gosting Castle Ruins. 2 hours there, then drive 30 minutes to Lurgrotte Caves. 2 hours there. Drive 20 minutes to air bnb. Do laundry.
Day 9 - Sleep in, drive 2 hours to Hallstatt Austria, to hotel, Gasthof Bergfried. Hang out in Hallstatt for the afternoon.
Day 10 - Sleep in, walk around Hallstatt, have Salt Mines tour at 1pm. Same hotel
Day 11 - Sleep in. Another day in Hallstatt. List of potential activities: Walk Oldtown, visit the Ossuary, visit Rudolf's Tower, kayak in the lake. Same hotel
Day 12 - Sleep in until check out time. Drive 1 hour 15 minutes to Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves. After tour drive 1 hour to Salzburg hotel, Alderhof.
Day 13 - Sleep in, spend the day in Salzburg. Potential activities - walking old town, visiting untersberg mountain and taking the cable car, visiting Hohensalzburg castle (must do), Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Salzburg Cathedral. Same hotel
Day 14 - Sleep in, visit Hitler's Eagles Nest. More Salzburg exploring. Same hotel.
Day 15 - wake up 7 am- drive 2 hours to Munich airport to catch 2pm flight home.
