First solo trip to Iceland: Places to stay outside Reykjavik?
Hi all! I'm taking my first solo trip ever, and I'm headed to Iceland on March 21-25. I'm a 25/M traveler coming from Chicago.
I want to spend the first 2-3 days outside Reykjavik, maybe to tour the Golden Circle or the southern coast, though I'm open to other suggestions. Which city/town should I look for hostels to stay in? I read on Lonely Planet that it's best to stay somewhere outside Reykjavik, to save time on traveling.
Also, would you recommend going with a tour group, or should I just rent a car and drive myself? I do like the added flexibility of driving a rental car, but I'm unsure about the winter weather and would have to spend a lot more time planning my trip.
For the last 1-2 nights, I'm already planning to stay in Reykjavik. Let me know if you have suggestions as well! I'll probably look for a quiet hostel where I can just relax and read, since I'll be preparing for an exam I have to take when I return to the States. (An awful way to use my vacation time, I know, but I'm the one who signed up for grad school, and I have no control over my exam schedule!)
