22 hour layover in Mexico City - what's practical here?

Hi all

I'll be vacationing in Colombia this coming May between the 12th and 26th. The route for my return to YYZ includes a long layover in Mexico City. I will arrive at 7:30 PM on Saturday the 26th and my flight is on Sunday at 5:30 PM. I figure it'd take me an hour or so to get out of the airport with my luggage, at which point, well, there's time to grab dinner and crash at best. My thought was to get an early start the next morning with one of two itineraries.

First, more modest choice would be to walk around Centro Historico, visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral, Templo Mayor, and Plaza de las Tres Culturas, then grabbing lunch and heading back to the airport by 3 PM.

The other is to visit Teotihuacan, which I think is ambitious and tight but doable. I have read conflicting info about when it opens. Some places say 9, which makes it quite hard to spend a good 4h here. Others say 7:30 which I feel confident about. I would plan on taking the bus from Terminal Central del Norte, round trip.

I would love to do both, obviously, but am leaning towards the visit to Teotihuacan if possible. I have a gut feeling though, that I'm setting myself up for a lot of stress or potentially a missed flight. So if you more experienced (Mexperienced?) folks were in my shoes, which would you go for? Thanks!
