Hello!

I arrive in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 7 April and I fly from Astana 16 days later on 23 April. I intend to spend 2 days in Almaty, 7 days in Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek and around Issyk Kul), going back to Almaty for a day or two before making my way to Astana.

I appreciate that there is transport between the cities/towns, but how easy is it for a solo traveller to get to more obscure, potentially hiking/camping spots?

I'm aware I can get a train from Almaty to Astana (12 hours). How can I best break up this journey without going too far away from the train tracks, but potentially seeing some of Lake Baikal (*edit: Lake Balkhash) or quality Kazakh nature?

Any general recommendations welcome.
