New Zealand in June?
Hi there, I'm a 20 year old girl who recently got a chance to buy some very cheap plane tickets to New Zealand, and I've basically always wanted to go there, so I'm very tempted. It also sounds like a relatively nice way to ease myself into travelling solo as people actually speak English in New Zealand. Both of my flights would be to/from Auckland, and the stay would be ~4 weeks long.
However since I go to uni I can't go before my semester's over which means I'd have to go in June... Mid-winter for New Zealand. I can google the facts etc myself - the average temp in June seems to be around 10°C in Auckland (way lower for the Southern Island), it seems to be kind of rainy/windy and I imagine it gets dark pretty soon. I live in Sweden now though, so I'd pretty much be the same as being "back home".
The thing is I am very much into hiking and would like to spend a lot of my time in New Zealand doing just that - maybe not necessarily doing that many "actual" hikes (overnight or w/e) but definitely a lot of trips to the nature. I think hiking in rain and low temperatures is definitely possible - again, I've done it in Sweden -, but I'm really unsure about the amount of daylight. I've looked it up and it seems like June gets about 9.5 hours between sunrise and sunset, but with the rain that doesn't mean there will actually be 9 hours where it's light enough to comfortably do stuff outside.
Another thing to mention is I don't have a driver's licence.
I'm really questioning myself because I probably have at least 4 or 5 years left of uni so I won't realistically be able to go when it's summer in New Zealand for quite some time, and it's a wonderful opportunity - but also I don't want my trip to be spent mostly sightseeing in cities since that's really not my thing.
So I guess I'm mostly looking for someone to share their experiences about New Zealand during wintertime. All advice appreciated!
