Your thoughts on the classiest road trip - Champagne, France
What could be more classy than driving around and sipping champagne? In preparation of our next road trip, I'm looking for tips on the logistics, duration and stops when visiting the Champagne wine region in France.
Some background info
We're based in Europe and will be bringing our own car. We've visited France on vacation on several occassions but haven't visited the Champagne region deliberately yet.
We are both big fans of the Belgian lambic and geuze and it would be great to get a sense different, smaller, champagne houses in a similar way to how we've got to known lambic brewers and geuze blenders.
I like to get a high-level itinirary worked out before I leave that I can make day-to-day adjustments to when actually on the road. Most itiniraries I find connect Reims and Épernay and have you stop at a mix of bigger and smaller houses.
What I'm looking for
- When to go - I'm currently aiming for Spring 2018, let's say April to May. We expect the spring bloom to be great. An alternative would be harvest season in Fall. Any considerations I should take into account in terms of when to go?
- Where to go - Any tips on stops with either character or just generally of high quality would be much appreciated. Not only in terms of champagne houses but also in terms of places to stay and/ or eat.
- How to combine - Reims is closest to us and we'll be arriving from North. Anything not related to champagne that we shouldn't miss out on that's worth it when we're there? For example musea or nature. I'm considering linking the trip to a visit to Paris.
- What to avoid - From a distance the entire region does kind of look like a tourist trap.
- How much time - Is 3 days the sweet spot? How many days can one entertain oneself drinking champagne?
- Good sources of information - Besides here, where could I get more information on how to get off the beaten path.
Any help is much appreciated. Tips on what kind of champagne to get, based on my preference for geuze, (natural?) are much appreciated, but I expect I'd be better off in /r/champagne or /r/wine.
