Where to go in Asia?
Hello all, I want to take my first solo trip. I'm a 22 y/o male from the East Coast USA.
I am most considering China or Japan (or both) from early Dec. to early or late Jan. It seems most people recommend Japan much more strongly, it is easier for English speakers, more tourist friendly, and cleaner. I am actually more interested in China because it is more diverse, cheaper (although I need a Chinese visa for $120), and I would like to hike/visit mountains.
Some other things I'm factoring in are the weather: I have always been a little sensitive to the cold, so I'd probably stick to the south of either country. Also the scenery may be diminished (dead trees) or completely inaccessbile (snow)?
Also the culture shock, which I don't believe will effect me that much outside of the language barrier, although I am quite tall and heard Chinese transportation could be uncomfortable.
I realize Thailand is more popular for both, but I don't think it has as nice scenery and the tourists may be degenerates, although it's def cheaper than Japan.
Also, how successful have people been with the couchsurfing app?
Thanks! Hopefully this turns into more than a pipe dream.
