Just realized my valid passport isn't valid for my upcoming trip to Europe - what's my best option for a passport renewal? (based US/SF, CA, traveling to Spain/France/Italy)

Hey friends,

Just discovered that my passport needs to be valid for 6 months after my trip in order to be allowed entry to some of the countries that I'm visiting. I'm trying to evaluate my best option for the highest likelihood of having a renewed passport in time for my trip, Sept 24-Oct 6.

I looked at the Get a Passport in a Hurry page on travel.gov, and if I'm less than 2 weeks out I can schedule an appointment at the passport agency here in San Francisco as soon as the 11th. Is this the quickest option? Or should I do an expedited mail-in today for the extra 6 days? The travel.gov page is also a bit ambiguous about whether it's applying for a new passport entirely or a renewal if I should go in to the agency.
