A friend can't go on a planned trip to Shanghai in early October, and offered the trip to my wife. She has a valid passport, and visas seem to take around 7-10 days to get, so she is planning on going. My passport expired in July, and I hadn't bothered to renew it yet, but it's supposed to take 2-3 weeks. Combine the two worst cases, I wouldn't have enough time to get the visa before I can leave. It is technically possible for me to get all that together in time, but I don't know if I should buy airplane tickets until I know I can go, and that would leave it pretty late.

Any advice on last minute trips like this? Should I buy tickets and pay extra to make them refundable? Should I not plan on going, and just help my wife plan? She'd rather not go alone, but if it can't be helped she wants to go.
